Jurnal Perlindungan Tanaman Indonesia was developed from Ilmu Pertanian (Agriculture Science), a journal that was published by the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada in 1969. However, the very rapid development of crop protection and the needs of academic society on the availability of specific information of plant protection urged the department of Plant Protection in the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada to develop a journal that specializes in plant protection. Jurnal Perlindungan Tanaman Indonesia successful inaugural issue was established in 1995 with the ISSN 1410-1637 (print) and ISSN 2548-4788 (online) since December 2016.
Since June 2010, Jurnal Perlindungan Tanaman Indonesia is in collaboration with two professional organizations, i.e. the Entomological Society of Indonesia (Perhimpunan Entomologi Indonesia, PEI) and the Association of Phytopathology Indonesia (Perhimpunan Fitopatologi Indonesia, PFI).
Jurnal Perlindungan Tanaman Indonesia accredited for the first time in 1998 based on the decision of Ministry of Higher Education, Department of Education and Culture No. 111/DIKTI/Kep/1998. The second accreditation was accomplished in 2001 based on decision of Ministry of Higher Education No. 118/DIKTI/Kep/2001. The third accreditation was accomplished with “B” grade and it valid from 2004 until 2007 based on the Decision by the Ministry of Higher Education No. 39/DIKTI/Kep/2004. After nearly 10 years of non-accredited status, in 2017 Jurnal Perlindungan Tanaman Indonesia is again accredited based on the Decree of the General Director of Strengthening the Research and Extension, the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia No. 32a/E/KPT/2017, which is valid for five years.
In the process of preparing for the next accreditation, in 2017 Jurnal Perlindungan Tanaman Indonesia gradually improves itself into a more qualified journal. For instance, the journal applied for indexing to the Directory of Open Access Journal (DOAJ), in January 12, 207. After a waiting period for almost six months, in July 3rd, 2017; Jurnal Perlindungan Tanaman Indonesia was officially indexed in DOAJ. The content and appearance were also improved. Beginning with the 1st edition of volume 21, 2017; the numbers of articles published were more than doubled, and on each article the genesis of the contribution was included.
In 2018, based on the Decree From the Directorate General of Research and Extension Strengthening the Research and Extension, the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education no 30/E/KPT/2018, JPTI was established as Accredited at Level 2. This accreditation is valid for five years, starting the first edition of volume 21, 2017 up to the first edition of volume 25, 2021.
The accreditation motivated Jurnal Perlindungan Tanaman Indonesia’s staffs to work harder. Two of the results of these works are: 1. Starting with the first edition of volume 23, 2019, all articles would be published in English; 2. From October 1, 2019 on, Jurnal Perlindungan Tanaman Indonesia would only accept article written in English. The decision was made to anticipate the growing number of readers who have difficulties in reading the articles in Indonesian language, as well as so that Jurnal Perlindungan Tanaman Indonesia might be accessed and utilized by wider international audiences.
Jurnal Perlindungan Tanaman Indonesia also had its ups and downs. In 2020, in the mid of Covid-19 pandemi, the number of contributed manuscript dwindling down. The year before, Jurnal Perlindungan Tanaman Indonesia could publish 20 titles per edition, but in 2020 it could only publish 15 titles, although writer affiliation in the first edition of volume 24 was much more varied.
At present, the journal has subscribers and contributors from a lot of national and international higher education and plant protection research institutions, both public and private. There are also several individual subscribers, all of which make the journal rich and diversified in its content, dealing with many different plant protection problems and challenges.
