Research Experiences
A. During my PhD course I focus on the study after post genomic era. The question should be addressed is regarding the function of the particular genes. Proteomisc is one of the powerful tools to identify the gene function. We focus on several methods including, yeast two hybrid assay, Tandem Affinity Purification, coimunoprecipitation, in vitro pull own assay assay, bimolecular fluorescence complementation and characterization of protein structure to study Hd3a florigen signaling network in rice. We identify diverse novel proteins which mainly involved in florigen signaling. This new finding will open the new insight the multifunctionality of florigen, other than for flowering promotion. The important funding is identification of 14-3-3 protein as intracellular receptor of Hd3a florigen and lately was known to make a Florigen Activation Complex (FAC) together with transcription factor, FD to induce flowering.
B. Our research group using the pigmented rice (black and red rice) as a model plant. We are using biochemistry and molecular biology approaches to study functional genomics related with plant growth and development (flowering, somatic embryogenesis), pigments biosynthesis pathway, resistance of pigmented rice to biotic and abiotic stress. We are using genetic engineering to improve pigmented rice characters, such as gain of function methods (overexpression) and loss of function methods (RNA interference and CRISPR/Cas9 for genome editing). We also develop the pigmented rice, especially black rice as functional food which has phytochemical/nutraceutical components to improve human health.
C. We also interested to study plant-microbe interaction and focus on endophytic bacteria which are beneficial as Plant Growth Promoting and improve resistance to pathogen in several crop plants including sweet sorghum and banana. We also study of microbiome isolated from specific environmental condition, i.e. termite and milkfish gut, rhizosphere, contaminated area and clone these important genes into E.coli expression system to further characterize and produce the proteins/enzymes.
