Data were collected from an interview with the indigenous speakers of Wooi, Poom, Ansus, and Ambai languages. This research employed a historical-comparative linguistics approach, which is the lexicostatistics and glottochronology method. Data were in the form of 200 basic vocabularies and were calculated with lexicostatistics and glottochronology formula. These research findings indicate the 64% language kinship between Wooi and Ansus. That result is the highest percentage of language kinship between the four languages. 54% is between Wooi and Poom. 53% is between Ansus and Ambai. 49% is between Ansus and Poom. 45% is between Wooi and Ambai. And 35% is between Poom and Ambai, which is the lowest percentage of language kinship. Thus, this study proves that Wooi, Poom, and Ansus are the languages classified into a family. Wooi, Ansus, and Ambai are also the languages classified into a family. This study investigated the use of phatic expressions among Indonesian and Australian students, examining how cultural backgrounds and social contexts influence their communication styles. Using a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) with both qualitative and quantitative methods, this research revealed significant differences between the two groups. Australian students frequently used phatic speech to initiate conversations, provided comfort, and expressed empathy, emphasizing respect and interpersonal connection. In contrast, Indonesian students tended to use phatic expressions to promote social harmony, engage in casual discourse, and offer interpersonal support, often focusing on group cohesion. Social variables, such as social status and distance, played a critical role in shaping the choice of phatic functions and forms, with both groups adapting their communication strategies based on these factors. The findings highlight the intricate relationship among culture, social dynamics, and language in phatic communication, offering a nuanced understanding that can enhance intercultural interactions, minimize misunderstandings, and improve communication effectiveness in multicultural settings. This research underscores the importance of considering cultural and social contexts when analyzing language use, contributing valuable insights for educators, linguists, and communication professionals aiming to foster more effective and harmonious interactions across diverse cultural landscapes.</p> Assayyidah Bil Ichromatil Ilmi, Agwin Degaf Copyright (c) 2024 Deskripsi Bahasa https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 https://dev.journal.ugm.ac.id/v3/DB/article/view/9966 Thu, 17 Oct 2024 00:00:00 +0700
