Abstract

The tradition of jamasan pusaka (heirloom washing)  is a cultural practice in Batang District that involves various types of plants in the rituals. Plants as part of cultural heritage, present an important role in maintaining the balance of parallelism and interrelationship between macrocosm and microcosm. Along with the times, the elements in the jamasan tradition have undergone various changes. The purpose of this article is to reveal the relationship and changes in ethnobotanical knowledge in the jamasan tradition. It also analyzes the transformation of the immanent and the transcendental function of plants interpreted by humans through the Jamasan Pusaka tradition. This paper used a qualitative research method with an ethnographic approach. Data collection techniques were observation, interview, and documentation. The findings showed that there are 19 types of plants involved in the jamasan tradition. The use of plants in the jamasan tradition comes from the local knowledge of the community because they have immanent and transcendental functions that are important for the continuity of the jamasan pusaka tradition. There are three classifications of the use of plants as mandatory ingredients based on immanent meaning, symbolic meaning, and non-mandatory ingredients. Jamasan is not only interpreted as a washing of heirlooms, but also interpreted as a life guide to live a full life. In practice, Jamasan Pusaka undergo various transformations. Changes in sacred to profane functions and immanent to transcendental meanings also reconstruct the existence of jamasan in the current era.
