Abstract
This article explores the existence of Bhīṣma in the
Ambâśraya Kakavin with applying the Dhvani theory of
Ānandavardhana in his book Dhvanyāloka. Dhvani is
basically a hint, a silent suggestion, and works mere
through evocation than through implication. Whatever is
implied can be arrived at merely from an analysis of the
implying statement or gesture. Not so with dhvani. No
amount of analysis can be lay bare the dhvani-effect, if
the hearer/reader does not have a special qaulity that
attunes him to it. Whereas an implication can be pin-
pointed, and even expressed, dhvani can never be pin-
pointed, much less can it be expressed in words. It can at
best be merely pointed at through figures speech of Old
Javanese kakavin but its precise content evades
formulation.
